We use a special system for bumping racers when they do better than the class bump handicap. This was approved at the September 2003 Race chair's meeting.
If you do somewhat better than the class 'strike' handicap, but not a lot better, you will get one strike, but remain in your class.
If you repeat on a second race, a second strike, you will get bumped. Also if you do so well as to place in the upper part of the next higher class, better than the class 'bump' handicap, you will get bumped immediately.
You will notice at the beginning of some classes on the published race results there are Strike/Bump handicaps.
When you earn a race handicap, the RCHP number on the results, between the "Strike" and "Bump" you get a strike. In previous seasons you would have been bumped, but now you get one more chance.
When you get a second strike during the year you get bumped as before to the next higher class.
If you earn a race handicap lower than the "Bump", you are immediately bumped as before to the next higher class.

The Bump is set so that if you get bumped you will end up in the top 1/2 to top 2/3 of the class you are getting bumped into.
Since the bump handicaps are not spaced evenly across all the classes, the strike numbers may not seem consistent.
There are different strike/bump HCP for SL and GS races.

HOW BUMPING IS REFLECTED IN YEAR END SEASON RESULTS.....
- Bumped racers receive World Cup Points according to their finish in their new class. Points received by all the racers in the bumped racer's new and old class will be adjusted to reflect their updated finish order.
- All prior races that bumped racers finished in will also have World Cup Points received by all the racers in the bumped racer's new and old class adjusted to reflect their updated finish order.
- Bumping can occur throughout the season and constantly affect season ending World Cup Points. World Cup Points will only be reported at the end of the year after all races have been reconstructed to come up with season-end points for final standings.
- A racer will not be bumped in the current season based on results obtained in the 5th & 6th race dates or the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th races provided the racer has finished at least 4 races prior to the race in which he/she might be bumped. Bumps that would have occurred as a result of the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th races would happen for the first race of the following season.
Are you in the appropriate class for your ability?
At the beginning of any season, any racer who feels they are in too fast a class relative to their ability should let their team captain or Al Lemke know before November 30 that you would like a review. We will then check your results from last year and determine if you are in the correct class based on your results.
The criteria is straight forward:
If you had raced in the class below where you were in the previous season, would you have been bumped into the class you are in?
If not, and you request this review, you will be moved into the appropriate class. The strikes and bumps criteria for each class are unchanged.
Additionally, if you got bumped last season into your current class then you are not eligible for re-evaluation until next season. All team captains will be asking their team members this same question. The team captains will then provide Al with a list of names to evaluate. You must let Al know before November 30 so we can do the evaluation in time for the first race. Speak now or forever hold your peace (or at least hold your peace through this season).
